Happy Holidays!

Hello there everyone, sorry this is a bit late.

MKMW will be on a hiatus of sorts until January.  I know all of you must be busy with holiday preparations and traveling,  and I am heading off tonight for my holiday adventure in Spain and Portugal.

It's been wonderful to get to know you all and virtually travel with you the past few months.  Have a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to may more travels together in 2009!

Week 26- The Philippines!

Off to the Philippines this week!

Here's what wikipedia can tell us about their cuisine:

"Philippine cuisine has evolved over several centuries from its Malay roots to a cuisine of predominantly Spanish base, due to the many Mexican and Spanish dishes brought to the islands during the colonial period. It has also received influence from Arab, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and American cooking."

sounds good to me!

Happy Travels,

Lauren

P.S.  Look for a special itinerary next week to get us through the holiday season.  I don't think it's practical for us to "travel" over the next weeks considering how busy I'm sure we all will be.

Week 25 . . . France!

Bonjour mes amis!  This week we are going to France!

Where will you visit?  A boulangerie in Paris?  A rustic meal in Provence?   Vacation cuisine from the cote d'azur?

Bon Voyage!

Please notice I've added a map that tracks where we've been in our travels together.  I think it'll be fun to update it and watch is cover the map!

Also, welcome our newest member, Jessica from Chubb

Week 24 . . . Ethiopia!

This week we'll be traveling back to Africa with another of Elra's suggestions . . . Ethiopia! I am a big fan of this cuisine and while I don't know if I'll make my own injera this week (a soft bread made from teff) I will definietly be trying my hand ata a delicious wat (curry).

I find these churches carved into the rock so fascinating . . .

Enjoy and Happy Travels!

Week 23 . . . Be Thankful

Hey folks,

This week is Thanksgiving in the United States. I know we don't all celebrate this holiday, but for those of us that do, this will be a busy week.  Before we hit the crazy rush of the holidays, let's take time out to pause and be thankful for all we have been blessed with.

Thanksgiving is a very family-centric holiday, so I propose we share a dish that reminds us of our own family.  It may express your heritage or geographical region, or it may just be something that reminds you of home, wherever that may be.  (After all, if you want to truly experience a country through it's food, dine with a local family!)

For our non-american members, if there is a big national holiday that is closely associated with food, perhaps we can celebrate it through or travels- just let me know when and how we could do that!

Let's also welcome our newest member, Rosa of Cooking with Rosie!

Happy Travels, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Week 22 . . . IRAN!

Sorry for the late announcement folks! And look for my Puerto Rico post tomorrow!

This week, Elra of Elra's Cooking assisted me in selecting the theme country. She actually provided me with a great list and we will visit them all, but first, ladies and gentlemen, we are going to Iran, where we will eat without preconditions (I couldn't help myself)!

Elra tells us that this cuisine is "truly exotic with using a lot of fragrant spices, flowers, fruits, and fresh herbs."

I'm excited about this one and the others Elra has in store for us!

Happy Travels,

Lauren

Week 20 . . . Ireland!

This week, Michelle from My Year to Get Skinny is taking us to Ireland, in memory of a great meal she had at Ballynahinch Castle.

So off to Ireland it is!  This will require some serious googling for me- the only thing I know of for sure is Guinness!!

Also,  please email me at itsmkmw@gmail.com if you would like to host.  I'm happy to create the itinerary on my own, but it's more fun this way!!

Week Nineteen . . . . Germany

This Week, Roxanne of Roxanne's Road Rules is sending us to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest was first held in Munich in 1810 in honor of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig. It attracts over 6 million people every year who consume 1.5 million gallons of beer, 200,000 pork sausages and 480,000 spit-roasted chickens during the annual 16-day beer festival.

Also, please officially welcome two new travelers:

Week Eighteen . . . Cambodia!!!

My first pick for our culinary travels together will be Cambodia.  I am a HUGE fan of Cambodian food.  My husband and I spent time there on our honeymoon and was surprisingly blown away by the tastyness of the food.  It is heavily influenced by both eastern and southern asian culinary traditions.

On a side note, thank you to all who left me such kind words of welcome as the new moderator.  Let's keep this event going and lets help it grow together!  I'm looking forward to many delicious travels together!

Her Kitchen, Her World Now...

Hello Traveling Chefs!
As all of you know, I have been slacking in the MKMW hosting as of late. Truth is, I rarely get out of Baking GALS mode anymore- and as for cooking anything at all, much less from our country of the week - well, that just isn't happening.

I love this group. It was my first baby. But BabyMama's handing over the reigns for a bit. Luckily, Lauren of I'll Eat You has offered to step up and get the MKMW back on track. I still hope to cook along with everyone as I can, which I hope will be often, but getting the group taken care of is my higher priority...and over at Baking GALS with it's 700 members, they need a full time mother. I am it.

So please welcome your new fearless MKMW leader. She thinks I am on speed, but sadly, I am not. So until I am, listen to your new Mama!
Thanks Lauren!

Korea Deadline...

Whoops - I guess a deadline would be appropriate?
Because of the holiday and everyone having so much going on already, let's extend the deadline to July 12th. In fact, that's our new rule...if there is a Holiday in the week, we get two weeks. Everyone okay with that?
I was also thinking...in honor of the upcoming Olympics, we need to start looking for an amazing Chinese dish to prepare for the week of the Opening Ceremony...that's August 9. I'd like to stay on an Olympic theme or the following week as well - does anyone have a great idea of what we could do? Maybe make a recipe from our own country, or the country of our favorite athelete...or any other ideas?? Please post them here...

Monday, June 30, 2008

Week Four...Korea

Thanks to Elra for choosing this weeks country! I just know that everyone will come up with something amazing - I have never attempted anything Korean...but I do have an adopted cousin from there...can that count? Bonus Points, maybe? Have fun everyone!!

Week One...Brazil

Thank the husband for this choice. Brazil. Posts need to be made by Saturday, May 31.. That gives you a little over a week to make it. So get started! Let everyone know what you are thinking - or fine, be sly and keep it to yourself until then. But please, DO NOT post your meal until Saturday the 31st. I will reveal the next country by Thursday each week, and posts will always be on Saturday. Not going to participate this week? Drop me a line and say why...but try not to miss a leg of this round-the-world adventure!

Welcome to My Kitchen, My World!

After much thought and deliberation (and much demanding from a hungry husband) I have set up this blog to document the journey of experiencing other cultures through food. That's right - food...that I make. And YOU make. Each week a country will be chosen, and we adventurous types will have 7 days to find a recipe for a dinner that takes us there for a fraction of the plane fare!
There are so many great baking groups out there already (like Daring Bakers & Tuesdays With Dorie, for example) but we need food food, too, right? Ever wanted to make Paella? Gnocchi? Stir Fry or Jamaican Jerk? Well, here's your chance. One dinner a week, start to finish, make a meal that takes you places. What could be better than that?

Join the group - its a big world out there!
All you need is a hungry belly, a blog to document your journey, the ability to post at least twice a month, and a kitchen! Each week we will vote as a group who had the most inventive and delicious looking dinners - who knows, maybe one day we'll even give prizes other than ego boosts!

Send an email to mykitchenmyworld (at) gmail (dot) com
and I will get back to you ASAP with the cuisine of the week!
Buon Appetito!
